Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of aromatic plant subtances (essential oils) to heal, balance and treat our bodies and emotions, maintain our health and promote well-being.
The term "aromatherapie" was first coined by Rene Maurice Gattefosse in 1928, a French chemist who, while working at his family perfumery business, discovered by accident the healing properties of lavender. Then there were Cuthbert Hall in 1904 with his experiments with eucalyptus oil and Dr.Jean Valnet who used essential oils to successfully treat medical and psychological disorders, which results were published in 1964 as Aromatherapie.
But it was Madame Margarite Maury who applied Dr. Valnet's researches to her beauty therapies and set up the first aromatherapy beauty clinics in Paris, Britain and Switzerland, and concentrated her studies on the rejuvenating properties of essential oils.
Even though the term aromatherapy is quite recent, the use of aromatic plants as fragrances, food enhancers, medical remedies and beauty aid dates from more than 3,000 years ago. |

Aromatherapy is a healing science that works not only through the sense of smell as many think, but it also can promote chemical changes internally since essential oils are readily absorbed by the skin and get into the bloodstream.
Pure essential oils are plant substances extracted from different parts of the plant, by hydro, steam or dry distillation or by expression.
They are not water soluble and evaporate when exposed to air. They should be properly stored in dark containers, protected from light and heat. Other natural aromatic substances are tinctures, absolutes, concretes and resinoids, used mainly in fragrance making.
Essential oils can be used in baths, massages, compresses, lotions, vaporization, douches, etc. You can experience true Aromatherapy treatments at Uhma Lifestyle Spa and Shop in South Beach, FL.
